Okay, this may sound weird, but every once in a while I get a nagging feeling in my head when I turn my head quickly. I usually get it at the bottom near my neck or behind my ears. Is that normal because when I tell someone, they always ask me what I'm talking about? %-)

To me also the same thing happened! I feel like if I move my head too fast I feel a sharp burning pain at the base of my head and if you touch my scalp it literally feels like it's on fire, you can feel the heat. It is very painful and I see spots and I get dizzy too. What's that?? Someone knows?

I also have a burning sensation in my head a few times a week.

Your symptoms seem to indicate that a nerve is pinched in your neck. A qualified chiropractor could help you adjust his neck.

I've had this all my life! Usually when I exercise and move my head in a weird way, it shakes from my neck to the base of my skull and heats up for about 5-10 seconds, paralyzing me with pain. But after 2-3 of the heat spike it goes away and it's like nothing happened immediately after!

This may be a muscle spasm. Like a little tingling in the neck. You get them when you overstretch a tight muscle. I exercise every day which makes my muscles very tight and if I'm not stretching too hard when I'm sitting in front of the computer and suddenly my head shakes… BAM! I get one it burns a lot and feels tingling and pain, usually lasting a few seconds to a minute. So my advice on how it works is to stretch all day, every day. Stretch after being in the same position for a long time. Do some head turns, just a little can help. The burning sensation is most likely from lactic acid in the muscle. just like when you exercise your muscles, they burn the same way. I hope that helps.

I also have a burning sensation, my father has it too, but no one else in the family. But when it hurts, my tongue tingles and numbs... this is not a muscle spasm for my mind. I've had this all my life.

It's been happening to me for as long as I can remember. It can only happen once a year. A rapid turning of the head usually follows, and then the rash. It feels like a warm liquid spreading across my skull. Most of the time I get a little dizzy for a few seconds and then it's fine again. I have also asked others if it happens and always get a strange look and no. I would be very interested in understanding this more.

I've also had them on and off all my life. I also don't know of anyone who has heard of it (other than those who posted here). If I tell any doctor, they act like they don't believe me. I would also like to know what is the reason for them. It happens when I turn my head quickly. I have a lot of problems with C7 and muscle cramps...it may be related. I have had multiple physiotherapy sessions for this C7 and frozen neck over the past few years. Two orthopedic surgeons took x-rays, thinking it was a damaged disc and wanted to operate on it. I had an MRI 3 years ago and then the doctor refrained from surgery and sent me to pt. PT thinks I have really weird nerve wiring.
I would like someone to write about the possible causes of this strange phenomenon and what kind of doctor would diagnose it.

I would go out with my friends. I heard my friend yell my name from behind. As I quickly turn my head to face the speaker, a sudden burst of intense pain shoots right at the base of my head. The pain is so excruciating that I have to stop and freeze for a moment while I hold my head tightly in my hands. This would continue for a brief period of 4-6 seconds. After that, I feel a burning sensation that throbs and gradually disappears. 10-20 seconds later it felt like nothing had happened. It is nothing like the pain of a terrible headache. In fact, it feels like the inside of my head is on fire. I have experienced this since my childhood. It happens so unpredictably, and it's not going to happen at every turn of my head. I feel like it has to be at a certain angle and tension when I turn my head to feel this pain. If I'm lucky, that won't happen for months. Other times I have had it more than once a day. I'm blessed that never happens while I'm driving.

Your description exactly matches mine. I've also mentioned it to others and they look at me like I'm crazy. Lately it has been happening to me up to 4 times a day with the burning lasting much longer. The pain is not there, just a slight burning sensation from the neck to the ears. It seems my neck has gotten very weak since I had a very bad episode of standing in line at a store to pay for items. The people there didn't know if he was having a heart attack or what; He was so weak from pain for a while that they just waited and watched. I'm glad I found this blog; At least I know there are others in the world dealing with this and I'm not crazy. It is something very difficult to explain.

I understand that too! My mother too. It was more common when I was little, but if I'm lucky it still happens to me once a month on average. It's seriously the WORST pain I've ever felt in my life when it happens. It is searing pain that makes me double over in pain and turn pale. Not black, everything turns white. It usually happens when I turn my head too fast, but every once in a while I "feel" one coming so I don't crane my neck to try and avoid it. Well, it still hits me.
The hot, stabbing pain lasts for about 5-10 seconds, and then I'm given about a minute or two of recovery time, during which time I still feel like I'd rather die than go through the dull, stabbing pain in the back of my neck. /head
I never asked a doctor what it was... I only knew I didn't have a stroke because my mom said she's had it my whole life too and she's still alive lol.
I assumed it was something everyone had experienced until I had one at work the other day and my coworker looked at me like I was crazy when I told her it was because I "turned my head too fast."

I've had the same thing for years! I asked people about it and got the same answer as mentioned in these previous posts. No one knew what he was talking about, so I chalked it up to hypochondria :-). Even crazier, but I think everyone can relate to, is the Brett Michael brain aneurysm situation. He was with Oprah today and explained what happened to her as a pop and then a similar feeling we've all felt (except it turned into a pounding headache and lasted much longer). I was ready to call my doctor right away, then I did some research and found this site and at least now I know this isn't just happening to me. The last time this happened was two weeks ago while I was driving. I quickly turned my head to the right, felt a pop, and then felt something like hot liquid spread down the right side of my neck and head. I couldn't lift my head so I had to sit at the red light, I was stopped and when it turned red I still couldn't move. It is temporarily debilitating and very scary.

I have had this problem too. It usually happens when I turn my head quickly and feel like a bubble has burst in my head and a burning sensation follows (like hot lava spreading in a small, localized area). After a few seconds the pain disappears. It used to happen a lot when I was a kid, but now I get this bursting feeling maybe once a year.

Hello everyone,
I've had this severe burning problem in my head for 5 years now and it's driving me crazy. I'm usually crying. I have now been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I have been taking gabapentin for 2 years now and they don't seem to be working, the burning sensation actually keeps me up at night so no sleep. I hope this has helped someone.
